We chose to do the section cut here because this is the most distinctive view to show the relationship between the roof and the platform as the core concept in this building is the platform. Firmness and security are what we feel to the fact that they stand on a platform with the same outline as that of the roof or sometimes even of larger size, depending upon the importance of the building. There is magic in the play between roof and platform.
Utzon substitutes solid walls with mullioned, glazed screens, columns or posts allowing the eye to trace along the horizontal plane with minimal interruption. Eliminating the solid wall reduces the sense of interiority and shifts the role of enclosure to the sheltering roof or to a space within a second layer of walls.
Jorn Utzon's design of Can Feliz encompasses the architectural pursuits of his career; his use of natural materials connects with his interest in 'the platform' and in the ancient Mayan and Chinese architectural culture.
